An analysis is made of a series of key parameters required to characterize the individual reservoir production performance and from them to adopt a development strategy for an oil basin composed of several oilfields. The early reservoir characterization and production profile estimation is of key importance for the decision making process of the most feasible development strategy of an oilfield project. The estimation of the initial hydrocarbon reserves and reservoir production performance allows the design of a range of technical and economic feasible concepts to exploit an oilfield. The use of reservoir analogy is adopted for the estimation of petroleum reserves required for such technical determinations. An improved model of the reservoir production performance can reduce the uncertainty of the new development by narrowing the range of outcomes for the decision maker. A case study is considered to apply the method to characterize the production profile of the Campos basin, located in Brazil.
