Sobral, J. and Guedes Soares, C. (2021), “Reliability analysis of critical systems installed in ships based on degradation mechanisms”, Developments in Maritime Technology and Engineering, Guedes Soares, C. & Santos T.A., (Eds.), Taylor and Francis, London, UK, Vol 1, pp. 261-268.

This paper presents a methodology that can be applied to acquire information about the reliability of items subjected to failures associated with degradation, using mathematical models for extrapolation (like the Linear, the Exponential, the Power, the Logarithmic, the Gompertz or the Lloyd-Lipow) followed by a life data analysis based on the estimated times to failure. The work refers the main systems installed on ship engine rooms and presents a demonstrative example of application of the methodology for oil filters belonging to the lubrication system. Following the methodology proposed it is possible to observe the risk incurred and most of time correct manufacturers’ specifications with real field data.
