This paper presents an approach for building leading risk indicators of the various Safety Barriers (SBs) of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carriers. This target is achieved by introducing literature review on the concept and definitions of SBs and Safety Barrier Management (SBM). The second step is the identification of the critical variables to each SB and the methods of determining the critical ones that needs to be included in the continuous monitoring process. This is followed by providing the method of quantifying the leading indicators’ values to provide real-time information on the risk level of SBs. The method is built on the related literature to the oil and gas industry, however, the case study is implemented on the containment SBs of the LNG carrier’s during the cargo unloading operation. Finally, discussion of the benefits of the method and the possibility of utilising it with other risk studies is presented.
