Santos, T.A., Martins, P. and Guedes Soares, C. (2021), “Characterization of the cruise ship fleet calling in the port of Lisbon”, Developments in Maritime Technology and Engineering, Guedes Soares, C. & Santos T.A., (Eds.), Taylor and Francis, London, UK, Vol. 1, pp. 91-100.

This paper presents a study of the cruise ship fleet that called in the port of Lisbon in 2018, based on data provided by the port authority. This analysis is supported by a comprehensive database of cruise ships currently operating in the world fleet, which was developed to support the study. The information in the database is presented and its representativeness is assessed in comparison with other sources of information. The technical parameters, the characteristic ratios and the technical trends for this type of ship are identified. This world fleet is then compared with the subset of ships (fleet) that actually called in the port of Lisbon during the year of 2018. Relevant differences between this subset and the world fleet in terms of ship size (length, draught, tonnage), installed propulsion and auxiliary machinery power, passenger capacity, age and market segment are identified and analysed. An attempt is made to identify the profile of the typical cruise ship calling in Lisbon. Conclusions regarding implications for the port of Lisbon are drawn.
