The collision risk modelling of ferry ships in the Yangtze River is conducted, based on AIS data. Risk Influencing Factors (RIF) including Distance to Closest Point of Approach (DCPA), Time to Closest Point of Approach (TCPA), distance and Relative velocity are involved. First, the relative weights of the RIFs are determined using entropy theory. Then, the Collision Risk Index (CRI) is proposed considering multiple encounter ships. The performance of the proposed model is evaluated according to the analysis on several encounter scenarios with different levels of collision risk. Furthermore, the areas with relatively high collision risk when ferry ship crosses are identified. The results bring some new insights in enhancing navigation safety of ferries.
