This work investigates the shock pulse approach in inspection of corroded steel plates in identifying the degree of degradation and ultimate capacity. A series of rectangular steel plates are artificially corroded using the random field approach. Employing the FEM, a shock-pulse load is subjected to the corroded plates and resulting transient structural response is analysed. Non-corroded steel plates of a wide range of thicknesses are firstly analyzed to estimate the ultimate strength and later they are subjected to a shock pulse load to identify their transient structural response. The inspection is performed by applying a shock-pulse load to the corroded plates and the resulting transient response is compared to the closest transient response of a non-corroded plate identifying the corrosion degradation level and the ultimate strength of the corroded plate. The developed approach can be used in a real conditions of inspection, presenting significant savings in both money and time.
