(2021), “Instrumentation and data acquisition system for full-scale manoeuvrability tests on board of naval surface ships”, Developments in Maritime Technology and Engineering, Guedes Soares, C. & Santos T.A., (Eds.), Taylor and Francis, London, UK, Vol 2, pp. 227-234.

A monitoring and data acquisition system is being developed, including an inertial measurement unit, a fibre-optics gyrocompass, a high-precision GPS unit, and a wireless weather station. Ships’ own sensors data, will be used also. All the sensors will be synchronized by a controller that runs a real-time application developed in LabView®. The system is to be used in full-scale manoeuvring trials with three ships operated by the Portuguese Navy. The parameters to be recorded are: the instantaneous vessel’s geographical coordinates; the speed over the ground; the course over the ground; the heading; the heave, roll and pitch angles and the corresponding velocities and accelerations; accelerations in surge and sway; the relative wind, the engines rpm, the ship log speed, and the instantaneous propeller pitch. For tests in rough weather, a wave radar sensor will also be installed.
