Silva, D. and Guedes Soares, C. (2021), “Validation with satellite data of SWAN model for wave conditions at the Madeira archipelago”, Developments in Maritime Technology and Engineering, Guedes Soares, C. & Santos T.A., (Eds.), Taylor and Francis, London, UK, Vol 2, pp. 665-672.

This work aims to present the sea state conditions around Madeira archipelago, with an emphasis on the three areas selected under the ARCWIND project, with a hindcast system of 5 years (2012-2016). The WAVEWATCH III (WWIII) model was used to provide the boundary conditions for SWAN (Simulating WAves Nearshore), which performs the calculations of the wave spectrum evolution in the nearshore. SWAN also used the bathymetry from GEBCO (General Bathymetric Chart of the Ocean) and wind fields from ERA5, provided by ECMWF (European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). The validation was done against satellite data using the statistics parameters Bias, Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Scatter Index (SI) and Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient (r). Grid maps with Hs averages for the total, summer and winter cases are presented as well the 90th-percentile. For each of the areas, one point was selected and studied in terms of the Hs temporal variability (Coefficient of Variation, Seasonal Variability, Monthly Variability, Mean Annual Variability and Inter-Annual Variability), the Hs/Tp mean, max, min and the sea sate (Hs/Tp) with more occurrences.
