Gonçalves, M. and Guedes Soares, C. (2021), “Assessment of the wave resource in the Azores coastal area”, Developments in Maritime Technology and Engineering, Guedes Soares, C. & Santos T.A., (Eds.), Taylor and Francis, London, UK, Vol 2, pp. 569-576.

This work provides information on the wave resource and sea state conditions along the Azores Islands. Using spectral boundary conditions from WW3, the SWAN model is used to study the wave evolution in the Azores coastal area (35oN-41oN, 36oW-24oW). The wind input fields used are from ERA5 data base, with time steps of 6 hours, over a grid of 0.25ox0.25o resolution, for a 5-year period between 2012 and 2016. A statistical analysis of the results is performed for the complete period; the numerical results have been compared and validated with buoy measurements from five wave buoys demonstrating that, in general, simulations are well reproduced by SWAN model. The geographical distribution of the wave resource is evaluated, and monthly means, inter-annual and seasonal variability are assessed.
