Bernardino, M., Silva, D. and Guedes Soares, C. (2021), “Evaluating trends and variability in the Portuguese coastal wave energy potential using a 22-years high resolution hindcast”, Developments in Maritime Technology and Engineering, Guedes Soares, C. & Santos T.A., (Eds.), Taylor and Francis, London, UK, Vol 2, pp. 529-538.

The aim of this paper is to evaluate possible changes in available wave energy potential in the coast of the Iberian Peninsula using a 22 years high resolution wave hindcast that represents the historical marine climate in this region. The SWAN model used the wave spectral information data from ERA-Interim together with wind data from an EURO-CORDEX WRF simulation, to produce a high-resolution wave data for the region. For 8 locations in the Portuguese coast, the wave power potential was assessed studying mean and variability at different time scales. Variability was evaluated using the coefficient of variation, seasonal variability index and monthly variability index as well as mean annual variability and inter annual variability. Trends in mean annual wave power were also investigated. The total annual energy available and the exploitable energy for the different locations is presented and a comparison between the western and the southern coasts is performed.
