Guedes Soares, C., Bitner-Gregersen, E. e Antão, P. (2001), "Safety and Reliability Considerations in the Ship Structural Design", Proceedings of the 1st International Congress of Seas and Oceans – Seas and Oceans 2001, 18-22 September, Szczecin – Miedzyzdroje, Poland, pp. 101-113

The paper reviews recent results on the safety and reliability considerations in ship structural design. Accident statistics are discussed as indicators of the overall level of safety. Reliability based structural design is presented with respect to different formulations including strength degradation phenomena resulting from corrosion and fatigue. The effect of inspection and maintenance repair work on time varying reliability is also presented. It is demonstrated how structural maintenance can be planned based on the results of structural reliability assessments.
