Silva, D. and Guedes Soares, C. (2021), “Assessment of the wave power resource at Madeira archipelago with SWAN model”, Developments in Renewable Energies Offshore, Guedes Soares, C. (Ed.), Taylor and Francis, London, UK, pp. 45-54.

The wave energy resource around Madeira archipelago is presented, focusing on three areas where floating wind energy turbines can be installed. The assessment is done using a 5 years (2012-2016) hindcast data, from a wave prediction system with WAVEWATCH III and SWAN models. SWAN for nearshore simulations, used the bathymetry from GEBCO (General Bathymetric Chart of the Ocean) and wind fields from ERA5, provided by ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). The wave energy average grid maps are presented for the total and seasonal time cases (spring, summer, autumn and winter). For three points, within the areas, temporal variability was evaluated using the parameters Coefficient of Variation, Seasonal Variability, Monthly Variability, Mean Annual Variability and Inter-Annual Variability. The Area near Porto Santo presents higher wave power values than the Areas near Madeira, with a total period average of 20-25 kW/m against 15-20 kW/m. Winter is the season with more wave power available.
