Tadros, M., Ventura, M. and Guedes Soares, C. (2020), “Optimum design of a container ship’s propeller from Wageningen B-series at the minimum BSFC”, Sustainable Development and Innovations in Marine Technologies, Georgiev, P. & Guedes Soares C. (Eds.), Taylor and Francis Group, London, pp. 269-274

In this paper, an optimization model is developed to automatically select a suitable fixed pitch propeller from Wageningen B-series for the cruising speed of a container ship at the minimum BSFC along the engine load diagram by verifying cavitation, strength and noise issues. This model, presents a practical technique, to design a propeller at the engine operating point with minimum BSFC in order to decrease the fuel consumption and therefore the exhaust emissions during the sailing of the ship instead of only maximizing the propeller efficiency as presented in previous researches. Then the propeller curve is computed for different ship speeds and loads in calm water.
