(2020), “Numerical analysis of ship collisions accounting for bow and side deformation interaction”, Developments in the Collision and Grounding of Ships and Offshore Structures, C. Guedes Soares (Ed.), Taylor and Francis Group, London, pp. 57-64

The paper presents the finite element simulations of ship collisions accounting for bow and side deformation interaction. It analyses the resistance of a container ship’s side structure collided by two different bulbous bows. One collision analysis shows two identical colliding ships originated from the container ship; the other collision analysis considers a smaller size of striking bow originated from a bulk carrier. The numerical results manage to describe the respective energy absorbed by the striking bow and struck side structures, with respect to the structural impact strength. The influence of rigid and deformable striking bows as well as collision locations on the impact resistance of struck side structure is investigated. The work provides a good understanding of the crashworthiness of ship side structures.
