This paper analyses the extreme response of a semi-submersible floating support structure for a wind turbine installed in the northern North Sea. The environmental contour method is used to directly estimate the extreme sea states that are used thereafter to calculate the long-term extreme response of the semi-submersible. This study focuses on the 1D and 2D environmental contours model based on the inverse first-order reliability method (IFORM). The significant wave height and peak period are the two environmental random variables used to estimate the contour. The response amplitude operator of the heave, surge, and pitch in head waves are estimated using the 3D panel method. A full long-term analysis is performed and compared with that estimated by adopting the 1D and 2D model. The results show a remarkable deviation between the full long-term analysis and the long-term obtained by the environmental contour method except in the heave response.
