An overview is presented of the risk involved in marine transportation as well as of the measures taken to keep them within acceptable levels. The risk in the world fleet are presented and some of the main features are discussed. The specific aspects of risk assessment in some types of ships are then discussed. Finally, the way in which safety safety management is conducted within the maritime industry is addressed.
