Kamarlouei, M. and Guedes Soares, C. (2019), “Hydrodynamics of a new two body wave energy converter in the frequency domain”, Advances in Renewable Energies Offshore, Guedes Soares, C., (Ed.), Taylor & Francis, London, UK, pp. 315-321

A new concept of two body wave energy converter is proposed in this paper. The presented concept consists of a torus and floater which are outer and inner bodies, respectively. The frequency-domain analysis is applied to the concept design to evaluate its efficiency in various conditions. One of the benefits of two body absorbers is the possibility for resonance between two bodies and wave which could be a result of hydrodynamics and control optimization of the concept. Furthermore, the energy extraction is based on the relative motion of two bodies which in this case is the heave motion. To obtain the hydrodynamic coefficients of the device an open source BEM code is used. Before evaluating the energy absorption of the device, the code is validated with the results of an equivalent concept. The results of this study show that the proposed concept presents a considerable efficiency curve related to sub-optimal damping value.
