Zhang, HD., Shi, H.D. and Guedes Soares, C. (2019), “Evolutionary properties of mechanically generated deepwater extreme waves induced by nonlinear wave focusing” , Ocean Engineering, Vol. 186, pp. 106077

A concise review related to laboratory experiments and numerical simulations of deep water extreme waves is conducted in this paper. To guarantee the full development of nonlinear wave focusing process and to eliminate the influence of variability in statistical analysis, some useful practices associated with laboratory experiments are summarized. For better applying different numerical methods to the continuous study of extreme waves, a comparison of four typical wave models is made with respect to their advantages and disadvantages. To clearly summarize the evolutionary mechanism of 2D extreme waves in irregular sea states, variations of characteristics of extreme waves at four critical stages are briefly discussed herein on the basis of spectral and statistical analysis. Last, some problems that have to be further researched are briefly discussed.
