Guedes Soares, C. and Faulkner, D. (1987), “Probabilistic Modelling of the Effect of Initial Imperfections on the Compressive Strength of Rectangular Plates”, Proceedings of the Third International Symposium on Practical Design of Ships and Mobile Units (PRADS), Trondheim, Norway,Vol. 2, pp. 783-795

The compressive strength of plates depends on the level of weld-induced distortions and residual stresses which degrade its strength by an amount that depends on the geometry of the plates, its material properties, and its boundary conditions. In rectangular plates, their strength will also depend on the mode in which they collapse. This work develops a probabilistically based method that predicts the strength of plate elements accounting for all these parameters.
