Liu, B. and Guedes Soares, C. (2016), “Review of experimental work on energy absorption in ship structural components”, 7th International Conference on Collision and Grounding of Ships and Offshore Structures (ICCGS 2016), 15-18 June, Ulsan, Korea, pp. 157-164

This paper aims at summarizing the experimental work that has been performed by the authors in recent years on the energy absorption of ship structural components under impact loading. The investigated components include beams and plates, and more complex structures, such as stiffened panels and web girders scaled from a ship double-hull structures. The investigations are used as benchmark for defining material nonlinearities and failure criteria that are needed in the finite element analysis. Some comments are offered on the technical difficulties in interpreting numerical simulations.
