(2009), “An investigation of dynamic instabilities caused by parametric rolling of C11 class containership”, Proceedings of the 13th Congress of International Maritime Association of Mediterranean (IMAM´09), 12-15 October, Istanbul, Turkey

This paper addresses the technical background parametric rolling and relates it to the operational guidelines from ABS Classification Society. A brief explanation of the physics of the parametric rolling resonance phenomenon is given, following the structure of the proposed Guide on longitudinal (head and following) waves. The analysis criteria is applied to determine if a particular vessel is vulnerable to parametric rolling (susceptibility criteria) for the attainable ship speed and heading. A non-linear time domain simulation program for predicting ship motions instabilities in waves is utilized to determine how large these roll motions might be (severity criteria). This study is conducted on a post-Panamax, C11 class containership which proved to be particularly prone to exhibit this behaviour. New experimental results are presented and comparisons with numerical predictions were performed in order to demonstrate the validity of the proposed technique for parametric rolling prediction in regular as well as in irregular waves.
