Guedes Soares, C., Fonseca, N. and Pascoal, R. (2006), “Characteristics of Abnormal Waves and their Induced Global Load Effects in Marine Structures”, Proceedings of the SNAME Annual Meeting (2006 SNAME Maritime Technology Conference & Expo and Ship Production Symposium), 10-13 October, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA

Nowadays it is acknowledge that abnormal, freak, or rogue waves exist and that the encounter of ships and other marine structures with these waves may result in structural damages. The paper presents the results from recent investigations into the mechanisms that might induce the occurrence of these waves, about their characteristics and the probability of their occurrence. The study is based on extensive wave measurement data which allowed the identification of a set of abnormal waves. This set of abnormal wave traces has been used as input to a nonlinear time domain code with the objective of investigating the global structural loads induced by abnormal waves on a containership and on a FPSO platform.
