The wave interaction of articulated floating elastic plate is investigated considering the Timoshenko-Mindlin thick plate theory for both finite and shallow water depths. The elastic plates are modelled as finite flexible floating structure interconnected with vertical linear/rotational spring stiffness. The eigenfunction expansion method along with the orthogonal mode coupling relation for the open water and plate covered boundary condition is applied to analyse the hydrodynamic behaviour of the interconnected structure. The articulated floating elastic thick plates are considered to be flexible at the connecting joints with variable translation and rotational stiffness. The study is performed for different articulated edge conditions for varying plate thickness and water depths to understand the behaviour of articulation under the action of ocean wave. The numerical results for articulated floating elastic plates are analysed and the complexities involved in the connecting joints with varying plate properties and spring stiffness is discussed. The hydroelastic response of the interconnected floating elastic plate with different connector stiffness is observed to compare well with the result available in the literature. The present study helps to understand the significance of rotary inertia and transverse shear deformation in the hydroelastic behaviour of the articulated floating thick elastic plates and also provides an insight into the effect of articulated joints with varying spring stiffness for suitable design of the structure. Keywords: Hydroelasticity; Timoshenko-Mindlin plate theory; articulated plate; VLFS; rotary inertia; transverse shear deformation.
