Yeter, B., Garbatov, Y. and Guedes Soares, C. (2018), “Risk-based assessment of fixed offshore wind turbine support structures”, Proceedings of the ASME 2018 37th International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering (OMAE 2018), 17-22 June, Madrid, Spain

This work presents a structural assessment of fixed offshore wind turbine support structures with respect to possible failure mechanisms. The studied support structures are verified based on the design criteria, which concern the static and dynamic behavior. Subsequently, the fatigue assessment is carried out a more detailed design. Moreover, the ultimate strength of a monopile support structure is analyzed accounting for the nonlinearities associated with the material properties and geometry. Finally, it is also developed a risk-based assessment for an optimal life-cycle of offshore wind turbine support structures. The economic criteria are considered in the defining the consequences of failure. A multi-dimensional framework is developed as a decision-making tool to evaluate the viability of the offshore wind turbine project throughout the service life accounting for the necessary measures. Recently performed studies in the field are also revised here.
