Wash plates are used to minimize the impact load resulting from the sloshing. The design of wash plates, to withstand both lateral and axial loads, is an important issue to be satisfied and the presence of multiple openings affect directly the strength of the wash plates. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of the number of opening sets on the strength capacity of wash steel plates and to find out the appropriate number of opening sets to optimize the structural capacity. A series of finite element analyses are performed, considering wash plates with a different degree of openings represented by a different number of opening sets. The number of openings sets, as well as the plate thickness, varies. Structural assessment of wash plates with a different degree of openings is carried out, aiming to identify a failure criterion.
