This paper presents a series of experimental and numerical study on the energy absorbing mechanisms of scaled tubular components and T-joints subjected to low-velocity impacts. These scaled specimens are made to represent tubular joints on a jack-up or jacket offshore platform. They are struck transversely by a falling wedge indenter. Measurements are taken of the force-displacement curves during the impacts. Quasi-static and high-speed tension tests are carried out to obtain the steel’s nonlinear stress-strain behaviour. Numerical simulations are carried for these scaled tests while the steel is modelled based on the measured strain-stress curves. Good agreements between tests and simulation were achieved. The experiments and simulations show that the brace member strongly affects the impact resistance of the entire tubular T-joints.
