Antão, E. and Guedes Soares, C. (2007), “Comparison of the Characteristics of Large Waves In An Offshore Basin And In Full Scale”, Proceedings of the 3rd International Workshop on Applied Offshore Hydrodynamics, 17-19 October, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

In this study a comparison is performed between the characteristics of waves in an offshore basin and at sea, concentrating on the larger waves in the sea states. Steepness of the maximum wave from each sea state as well as local steepness of different parts of the wave and its asymmetry are studied as shape parameters. The sea states used in the analysis were grouped in sets according to their significant wave height and mean period. On the basis of the characteristics of largest waves from each sea state it was concluded that tank waves successfully approximate storm waves while tank generated smaller waves show differences from full scale waves in particular as concerns crest steepness.
