Santos, T.A. and Guedes Soares, C. (2018), “Economic feasibility of an autonomous container ship”, Maritime Transportation and Harvesting of Sea Resources, Guedes Soares, C. & Teixeira A.P. (Eds.), Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK, pp. 861-870

Autonomous ships are currently in focus worldwide, in line with similar developments for other means of transportation. This paper presents a literature review on autonomous ships focused on the technical implications of autonomous operation in the design of the ship and in the quantification of changes in the cost structure of the ship (capital, operating and voyage costs). Taking in consideration these findings, the paper then presents a case study to evaluate the economic feasibility of a small container ship operating between mainland Portugal and the Azores islands. Measures of economic merit for such route using a conventional ship and an autonomous ship are calculated and conclusions on the economic feasibility of such operation in this particular route are drawn.
