This paper presents an approach that combines stochastic discrete event simulation with a metaheuristic based approach to the offshore crew transportation problem. The combination of the representational power of simulation, both in terms of complexity and incorporation of stochastic parameters, with an optimum search algorithm allows the investigation of a system configuration leading to cost minimization while seeking practical applicability of the solution. The approach is applied to the crew transportation problem for a remote offshore oil and gas field, where the aim is to compare a land based logistic operation, with helicopters transporting crews directly between land and the offshore production units, with a solution which includes a hub for the refueling of helicopters, which is expected to contribute to a higher helicopter occupancy rate and a more efficient resource utilization.
