Diaz, H.M., Rodrigues, J.M. and Guedes Soares, C. (2016), “Preliminary cost assessment of an offshore floating wind farm installation on the Galician coast”, Progress in Renewable Energies Offshore, Guedes Soares, C., (Ed.), Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK, pp. 843-850

A preliminary study of the optimal location and overall characteristics offshore wind farm at the northern coast of Galicia, Spain, is carried out. Environmental and technical requirements are weighted to choose the best location. Device characteristics, floating platform and turbine set, are determined considering a required 100MW power capacity, for which alternative configurations are studied and compared. Development, construction and installation costs of the several items present in such a project are taken into account to produce an initial estimate of these. It is shown that investing on an offshore wind farm still presents itself as a prohibitive high risk initiative from the well-established onshore counterpart, without further technological or political developments regarding governmental incentives.
