Hashemzadeh, M., Garbatov, Y. and Guedes Soares, C. (2017), “Distortion and residual stress analysis of thin butt welded plates accounting for manufacturing imperfections”, Progress in the Analysis and Design of Marine Structures, Guedes Soares, C. & Garbatov Y. (Eds.), Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK, pp. 623-630

The objective of this work is to analyse the effects of the manufacturing imperfections on the welding induced temperature, distortion and residual stresses. In the present study, the impact of different levels of a filler metal penetration / lack of fusion and initial linear misalignments and angular distortion of the welded plates on the residual stresses is investigated. A two-step non-linear finite element analysis is employed to simulate the welding process and consequently to estimate the temperature distribution, the post-welding distortions and residual stresses. The importance of parameters related to the welding process and imperfections is analysed and several conclusions are derived.
