(2017), “Fatigue strength assessment of an annealed butt welded joint accounting for material inhomogeneity”, Progress in the Analysis and Design of Marine Structures, Guedes Soares, C. & Garbatov Y. (Eds.), Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK, pp. 337-347

The objective this work is to evaluate the effect of material inhomogeneity on fatigue strength of an annealed butt welded joint using the finite element method. Material properties of different zones are predicted using empirical equations based on hardness. The stress state in the modelling is evaluated on the basis of experimental results. The influence of material model is determined by comparing the notch stresses and strains and crack initiation lives obtained from the inhomogeneous and homogeneous models under different loading conditions. Using the homogeneous model with the heat affected zone or base metal material can either slightly overestimate or considerably underestimate the crack initiation life. The inhomogeneous models with various mismatch ratios are employed to evaluate their effect on fatigue strength. Increasing the mismatch ratio to improve the fatigue strength is effective only if the mismatch ratio is below a certain level.
