Non-linear, large deformation and three-dimensional finite element analyses of a ship bulb impact with a ship side-shell structure in a ship collision scenario is conducted to analyse the energy absorbed by a specimen during a laboratory experiment. The results obtained by the finite element method are compared with available test results. The element size, material properties, loading speed, coefficient of friction, failure criteria, and boundary condition in the finite element analysis are discussed. The energy absorption of each component of the side-shell structure is estimated and discussed.
