Costa, T.C., Pereira, L.T., Marta-Almeida, M. and Guedes Soares, C. (2016), “Assessment of ocean current data modeled with ROMS for de Aguçadoura pilot area”, Progress in Renewable Energies Offshore, Guedes Soares, C., (Ed.), Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK, pp. 71-78

A ROMS based numerical configuration has been developed for the northern western Iberian region. The model was implemented with a spatial resolution of 3km and a temporal resolution of 30 seconds for the baroclinic mode, for 3 years The boundary, climatological and initial conditions used were from the HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) reanalysis (1/12º resolution), the atmospheric forcing was the Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) (1/3.2º resolution) and the tides applied were from the TPXO Global Tide Solution (1/4º resolution). The ocean model results are first validated using satellite sea surface temperature and afterwards in situ current data from moorings available from Puertos del Estado. Although the model was able to successfully replicate the satellite temperature data, the currents show a very large velocity variation and very high troughs and peaks when compared to the buoys.
