A post-processing implementation of the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) is used to improve the predictions in terms of mean wave periods of a high-resolution SWAN (acronym from Simulating Waves Nearshore) computational domain implemented in the Portuguese coastal areas. The new method consists in applying the EnKF algorithm directly on the parameter to be predicted, replacing the observation at the forecast time by the analysis previously obtained. This technique has previously led to good results when applied to the predictions of the significant wave height (Hs) and it is here also shown to be successful when applied to the predicted mean wave period (Tm). The forecast is performed with one time-step advance and demonstrates the potential to be applied to the guidance of ship movements in coastal and harbour approach areas. The same type of post-processing implementation is designed in the context of a theoretical extended study on wave hindcast and is applied to the same data of the buoys used for the forecast analysis.
