Transport is one of the most important sectors for Europe with its in-frastructure being essential for the well functioning of the entire economic and social network. By ensuring a high degree of protection of EU infrastructures and increasing their resilience, the consequences of loss of services to society as a whole can be minimised. Directive 2008/114/EC outlines the approach all Member States are required to follow to identify, designate, and protect Euro-pean Critical Infrastructures in the energy and transport sectors. Still, there are many discrepancies amongst Member States in terms of the extent to which policy principles have been put into practice. On this setting, the paper illus-trates a comprehensive benchmarking methodology which could be used to assess security levels in the five transport sub-sectors. The final goal is to en-hance overall security in the transport sector, taking into consideration sub-sector differences through the definition of the concepts of security aware-ness, preparedness and maturity.
