Santos, T.A. and Guedes Soares, C. (2015), “Port regionalization in the Portuguese range”, European Conference on Shipping, Intermodalism & Ports (ECONSHIP 2015), 24-27 June, 2015, Chios, Greece

he aim of this paper is to improve knowledge regarding the current status of port regionalization in the Portuguese range and identify possible enhancements in this respect. The ports located in the Portuguese west coast have been collectively defined as the ‘Portuguese Range’, constituting a multi-port gateway region, which could greatly benefit from port regionalization into bordering regions of Spain and the Madrid community. Portuguese ports, given its geographical location, can provide these regions with a competitive gateway to foreland regions along the Atlantic Ocean, such as Latin America, North America and West Africa. The paper first describes the current situation of ports regarding infrastructure, superstructure and rail connections, logistic areas and management structure, aiming at establishing its capabilities. Other transport infrastructures such as rail network and dry ports are also reviewed. Taking in consideration these infrastructures, initiatives taken to promote regionalization by governments and port authorities are reviewed and analyzed. Conclusions are drawn and policy suggestions are made for further improvements in the regionalization of Portuguese ports.
