Tarbiat, S. and Guedes Soares, C. (2015), “Wind shear effect on aerodynamic performance of wind turbine”, 3rd Symposium on OpenFOAM in Wind Energy, 15-17 June 2015, Politecnico di Milano, Italy

The aerodynamic performance of wind turbine was discussed by these authors in previous. In this paper the aim is to investigate the influence of the wind speed shear and the direction wind shear on output power of a 5MW wind turbine. First, the simulations with laminar flow and steady wind speed profile were compared to the uniform flow data by FAST. Then, a similar analysis was done for different wind speed profiles. For each case, the output thrust obtained and compared against steady flow. The numerical approach was used in this paper and the NREL 5MW wind turbine has been investigated in this paper to predict the forces. The governing equations are the Reynolds averaged NavierStokes (RANS) which were solved by the pimpleDyMFoam solver in OpenFOAM. For the mesh movements the AMI method was employed. Another approach in this paper was to study influence of wind speed direction on wind turbine performance. So, the wind directions are differing while as rotational velocity is constant and blade pitch is fixed. The numerical results details include the output thrust forces were presented and discussed.
