Guedes Soares, C. and Moan, T. (1983), “Statistical Analysis of Still-Water Bending Moments and Shear Forces in Tankers, Ore and Bulk Carriers" (in Portuguese), Ingenieria Naval, Vol. 51, pp. 75-89

Although the still-water loading of ships contributes significantly to the total load, little attention has been directed towards its systemtic treatment. In this paper a statistical study of the still-water bending moments and shear forces recorded in the operation of some ships has been performed. The data base consists of about 100 years of accumulated operation of 18 ship of three types. The analisys demonstrated significant differences in mean load levels between the ship types. However, the existing Rules do not specify different minimum still-water loads according to the type of the ship. Other conclusions were that the mean load levels, as a percentage of the Rule values, varied with ship size. In addition, the loads did not show a consistent variation with deadweight, increasing in some situations and decreasing in others. Test of fit were applied to the sample of loads, deadweight, trim, voyage duration and time in port. Extreme values obtained from this data were compared with the design values prescribed by Classification Societies and it was demonstrated how probabilistic methods can be used to calibrate structural design codes.
