This paper presents an automatic approach for measuring weld-induced deformations in plated structures. Close-range photogrammetry is used as a three-dimensional measurement technique to generate the displacement field from sets of digital images. Three-dimensional deformation models of butt-welded plates are obtained before and after three welding tests. Statistical analyses of comparisons between the photogrammetric results and Smith’s initial imperfection classifications are performed. The procedure is validated against direct measurements of the deformations. Surface modelling of the welded plates based on photogrammetric measurements are presented. Based on the modified Fourier series, a new function to represent complex surface is proposed and validated. A comparative study on the sampling element size is also included.
