Ventura, M., Vitória, J. and Guedes Soares, C., (2000), “Implementation of STEP Translators Using the Ship Hull Product Model”, Proceedings of the 1st International EuroConference on Computer Applications and Information Technology in the Maritime Industries (COMPIT’00), Potsdam, 29 March-2 April, pp. 463-476

Data exchange requirements during the complete life cycle of a ship have motivated the development of international standards for product data modeling. The ISO 10303 standard, commonly referred to as STEP, although still under development, provides already in a usable stage some of the Application Protocol that constitute the Ship Product Model. This paper describes some aspects of a pilot implementation of a ship hull modelling system and focus on the experience of implementation and integration of STEP translators for ship's hull form (AP216) and ship's structure (AP218) data. The scope and the limitations of the translators are discussed as well as the methodology for the validation tests carried out between different systems running on different platforms.
