The maritime areas under national jurisdiction off the continental coast of Portugal are crossed by busy commercial routes and an assessment and a characterization of near ship collision scenarios off the continental coast of Portugal is made. Automatic Identification System data are used for identifying near collisions and the relevant parameters that characterize the scenarios. The concept of “ship domain” is used as criterion to determine the near collision scenarios and a distinction is made between head-on, crossing and overtaking near collision scenarios. This provides some indications on the level of likelihood of ship collisions and their consequences on the sea areas along the coast of Portugal. From the analysis of the AIS data available, near ship collision scenarios are characterized in terms of ship types and dimensions, crossing angle, relative velocity, among others, and a statistical analysis of such parameters is presented.
