The paper deals with the search for a globally efficient scheduling of a set of rigs to meet the needs of an offshore oil field, aiming at minimizing production loss and the cost of rig utilization. The wells require different tasks to be undertaken by the rigs. The total number of tasks required by the wells is larger than the capacity of the fleet of rigs, and the optimal solution includes the choice of the rig itinerary. A mixed integer programming formulation is proposed to solve the offshore rig scheduling problem and the model is solved by branch-and-bound. An example application is made for a small set of wells, to demonstrate the method. For a realistically sized problem however, computation time is considerably larger, which will motivate the use of an approximation algorithm for which the relaxed linear program of the proposed model serves as a quality assessment benchmark.
