Impact experiments have been performed to evaluate the plastic deformation and failure characteristics of small-scale clamped rectangular steel plates struck by a mass with spherical and cylindrical indenters. The laboratory results are compared with numerical simulations. Six plate specimens are tested in order to study the influence of the impact velocity and the shape of the indenter. The experimental and numerical results show that the impact behaviour and the failure mode of the plates are highly sensitive to the geometry of the indenters. Comments are offered on the strain rate sensitivity of the plate material.
