This paper presents a comparison between the behaviour of a semi-submersible wind turbine located at two different locations using long-term analysis. The probability of exceedance of the wave force and the pitch moment of the floating structure is estimated. In order to perform the long-term analysis, a program is developed to carry out the numerical representation of the response spectrum for each sea state and the system transfer function. JONSWAP spectrum is applied to calculate the required spectra and Morison’s equation is conducted to estimate the transfer function of the system; Airy theory is used to assess the required water kinematics. The variance of each response spectrum is then calculated and used to estimate the short-term probability of exceedance. The long-term distributions for the semi-submersible support structure at both locations considered are then investigated. In fact, the study had shown despite the large diameters and the diffraction effects, Morison’s equation is still applicable to estimate the wave load in the present study. The results show that the position of the wave crest with respect to the different columns of the semi-submersible wind turbine results in a significant variation of the wave force.
