This study analyses every fifth day maximum significant wave heights (Hs) and associated peak periods (Tp), of the site Aguçadoura (41.46º N; 8.849º W, water depth- 40 m) offshore Portugal in the North Atlantic Ocean, extracted from 34 years SWAN data (1979 to 2012). The average conditional exceedances of significant wave height and associated peak period estimates from Erlang and Weibull distributions provide close fit to non-linear distribution of empirical values whereas from generalised Pareto caters a linear fit. The mean, average of the one-third and the one-tenth the highest of the wave parameter estimates by the models are consistent with the computed values. The average of the one-third the highest peak periods are contiguous to the mean peak period of the one-third the highest significant wave heights. Semi-centennial and centennial significant wave heights peak periods can be estimated by respectively gamma and Weibull, and gamma quantile functions.
