The need for data exchange in shipbuilding motivated the concept of a neutral data model that may support the information requirements during the complete life cycle of a ship - the Ship Product Model. A brief survey of the related research work done in the last years is presented, together with its impact on the evolution of the international standards. Focus is set on the emerging STEP standard, its structure and the methodology used for its development. Finally, the role of the Application Protocols, is discussed as well as their internal structure and how industrial specific business cases are being used to support their development.
