This paper addresses the retarding effect on the crack growth on a welded tubular joint subjected to a severe loading, in an offshore wind turbine support structures in a harsh sea environment. The loading comprises periodic overload resulting to a retardation of the crack propagation. This effect is analysed by employing the Willenborg retardation model. The Paris law is adopted to analyse cycle-by-cycle the fatigue crack growth. A standard geometry function of the through-thickness crack growth in a tubular joint is used to estimate the stress intensity factor for each cycle. High overload ratios that are close to the yield stress have been the main focus of the present analysis. The result of this study can be used to establish a framework for an optimal maintenance and repair planning for the cracked tubular structures.
