Castro-Santos, L., Martins, E. and Guedes Soares, C. (2015), “Calculation of the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) of a wave energy converter”, Renewable Energies Offshore, Guedes Soares, C. (Ed.), Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK, pp. 1003-1009

This paper is focused on floating offshore wave energy devices, which can be installed in deep waters (more than 60 m). The methodology proposed considers the life-cycle of floating offshore wave energy devices. In this sense, six main phases are defined: concept definition, design and development, manufacturing, installation, exploitation and dismantling. The main costs and sub-costs of these phases are calculated, considering their main variables. These are used to calculate the Levelised Cost Of Energy (LCOE) of floating offshore wave energy devices. The method proposed is applied to the particular cases of two wave farms in two regions of the Portuguese coast: the Pilot area (São Pedro de Moel) and the Aguçadoura region, which prove to be unfeasible. Results indicate the main values in economic terms of a floating offshore wave system, which is useful to make decisions in the future.
