The aim of this paper is to create a wind resource map for the Iberian coast using remotely sensed data. To accomplish this objective, 5 years of high resolution data obtained from the QuikSCAT satellite are used to estimate the amount of exploitable wind energy and identify areas that are best suited for offshore wind projects. In order to verify the accuracy of the QuikSCAT winds, comparisons with wind measurements collected from offshore coastal buoys are undertaken. To evaluate the effects of different data sources on the wind climate analysis, the surface winds simulated by the high-resolution model WRF have been compared to those retrieved from QuikSCAT. The wind power is mapped and quantified providing a good indication of the magnitude and distribution of the energy resources. The results demonstrated the applicability of satellite wind data as means to provide accurate wind information for offshore wind energy development.
